URGENT action to protect cyclists has been called for after a serious incident with an aggressive driver left a mother in tears.
Liberal Democrat council candidate Katherine Miles took to Twitter to post a video of herself in shock after she said she was the victim of an aggressive driver on Warneford Lane in Headington this week.
She said she was cycling to pick up her child from nursery when a driver behind her started swearing and ‘tooting’ their horn for the entire stretch of road.
At the junction between Warneford Lane and Roosevelt Road, she said the driver told her to get in the cycle lane, to which Ms Miles explained she couldn’t because it was unsafe.
In tears on her Twitter video, Ms Miles demanded better facilities for cyclists in Oxford.
Green councillor Dick Wolff shared her video and said: “On this short stretch of road we have a dangerous cycle lane that requires the prudent cyclist to move into the centre of the carriageway to avoid being ‘doored’ by someone exiting a parked car.
“On this occasion, the stress of cycling down this hazardous stretch of road was exacerbated by an aggressive driver who, frankly, has no place driving on Oxford’s streets, or indeed anywhere for that matter.”

He added: “The solution is not rocket science. Remove the cycle lane and make the whole stretch a cycle priority route with marking in the centre of the carriageway. Ideally, the parking should also be removed or better managed.”
Ms Miles previously appeared in this paper in July when she shared a post on Twitter about how she was riding home with her two children on Warneford Lane when police officers told her it wasn’t safe to be cycling in rush hour because drivers can be aggressive.
After that incident Ms Miles said: “They were very kind and considerate but I think this just shows the issue we are facing at the moment... we’ve been advised it’s not safe with Oxford traffic.”
