POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an eight-year-old girl was involved in a hit-and-run crash in Abingdon.

The girl was leaving the community centre in Midget Close at the junction of Preston Road and was walking across Preston Road, near to the Midget pub when she was in collision with a red car.

The driver of the car drove off leaving the girl on the grass verge.

The collision happened last Thursday at 7.30pm, but police only released details today.

The car is thought to be a red Vauxhall with a stripe on the bonnet and have a spoiler on the back. It didn't have any hub caps and the driver was wearing a black peaked hat.

PC Stuart Webber, from Abingdon police station, said: "We are appealing for anyone who may have seen the car or the driver at the time of the collision, and for anyone who recognises the description of the car to come forward.

"The young girl was deeply shaken after this and she was taken to hospital where she was kept in overnight for observations. She suffered relatively minor injuries and it is only through luck that her injuries are not worse."

Anyone with information which could help the police should contact PC Webber at Abingdon police station via 0845 8 505 505, or if you don't want to talk to the police or give your name, call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
