Sir - I find the letters and comments in articles about the new recycling scheme in Oxford both annoying and disappointing.
Dealing with the waste we generate and how we dispose of it is an ecological imperative. It is a communal problem and we all need to pull together to find solutions. We can't go on producing as much waste as we like and just expect it to be conveniently cleared away. This is not an issue that stands to benefit in any way from political point-scoring and petty mindedness. You can't vote out those responsible for the scheme, as has been suggested by some, because the scheme came in with cross-party support. This is the scheme you would have got however you voted (with some tweaking at the edges, perhaps).
A return to weekly collections for non-recycled waste (Report, November 30), whilst keeping recyclable collections at their present level, would have enormous financial implications, as councillors from all parties know. It isn't financially viable, which is why it's not being done.
The real issues are: how we get the Government (any government) to make manufacturers take responsibility for reducing packaging; how we get solutions put in place in advance of problems (such as food waste disposal) arising; what can we as individuals do to reduce the amounts of waste we produce? Whatever the answers, we can only do what needs to be done if we all play our part, together.
