An Oxford burger bar, devastated by the July floods, has welcomed back its first customers following a £300,000 refit.

The cellar at McDonald's, in Botley Road, was completely submerged and the rest of the restaurant filled with 2ft of potentially contaminated flood water.

Carl Room, who took over the franchise six weeks before the flooding in July, said he was delighted to open the doors to customers at the weekend.

Mr Room said all staff were offered positions in other McDonald's stores following the flood, and said some would now be returning to the Botley Road restaurant.

He said: "The floods were devastating for a number of local residents and businesses, but the support from the people of Oxford has been brilliant.

"Not just for me, but for the whole of the local community. Having a fresh and vibrant new look to the restaurant is very exciting for all of the staff.

"It's been five long months and we are delighted to be back with a new contemporary design."

He said the restaurant now had three TV screens, Internet access and sockets for laptops.

He added: "I hope we never experience anything like the July floods again and I would urge the Environment Agency and local councils to get together to make sure proper flood defences are in place."

The restaurant now has a red and brown colour scheme, communal benches and soft lighting. Insurers are covering the £300,000 cost.
