ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners called for urgent action to cut the 'unacceptable' levels of pollution across Oxfordshire today.

Members of Oxford Friends of the Earth rallied in towns with high levels of pollution to highlight Clean Air Day.

These include Chipping Norton, Bicester, Abingdon, Witney, Banbury, Didcot, Botley and Henley-on-Thames.

Chris Church of Oxford FOE commented: "Air quality is still too poor in too many places across Oxfordshire.

"It is not just the city centre – this is a problem for towns including Banbury, Henley, Chipping Norton and Witney.

"We need our councils and government to recognise this public health problem and to take real action to bring this under control."

Residents walked around carrying posters that warned that 'Oxfordshire air needs our care'.

Children also 'did their bit' and took part in the demonstrations across the county.

Oxford Friends of the Earth recently ran a banner design competition for Oxford Primary schools in partnership with Oxford City Council.

Headteacher at East Oxford Primary School Russell Kaye shared a heart-warming photo of some of his pupils, who stood in front of one of the banners.
