There is a simple and inexpensive solution to the problem of motorists abusing the bus and park-and-ride lane at Botley, Oxford - shut it.
If the section from the Botley interchange on the A34 to the traffic lights in Botley Road was taken out, the problem would be solved at a stroke.
To some, it may seem a minor inconvenience that dozens of motorists try to beat the queues entering Oxford from the west.
Doesn't this kind of inconsiderate behaviour happen everywhere?
But here there is real danger.
Drivers come sailing down the inside lane, take a sharp left turn, then barge their way into the flow of traffic. Or they turn into the park-and-ride site, make a quick U-turn and force other motorists to let them in.
It is an accident waiting to happen - and also an invitation for plenty of outbreaks of road rage.
Nothing is more infuriating - and likely to make tempers boil - than sitting in a line of traffic for half-an-hour, then having an impatient idiot cutting you up.
The county council has admitted that the system is flawed by refusing to allow motorists a similar concession to use the bus lane to the Water Eaton park-and-ride near Kidlington.
But it is unfair for the council to expect the police to devote scarce resources to solving a problem it created - it should sort it out.
Closing part of the lane might inconvenience some - but it might prevent a serious accident.
