MORE than 2,000 homes in Oxford were without power today.

Homes suffered a blackout at about 10.13am and three teams of emergency engineers from Southern Electric were sent to the area to find the fault.

Many of the 2,200 homes in the Iffley and East Oxford areas had power switched back on before lunch, but about 200 properties had to wait until the afternoon.

The blackout was caused by a high-voltage fault in a main substation in St Ebbe's.

A Southern Electric spokesman apologised for the power failure.

He said although investigations into the cause were ongoing, the high winds and rain were believed to be responsible.
