A THUG who was carrying cocaine on the day he assaulted two people has been given a community order.

Luke Shirley, of North Place, Oxford, had pleaded guilty to the attacks on a man and a woman in the city on August 14 last year.

The 20-year-old also admitted being in possession of the Class A drug and a bike lock that was judged to be a weapon.

At a later hearing at Oxford Magistrates' Court, Shirley pleaded guilty to racially abusing a man and using threatening, abusive or insulting words to another in the city on December 12, 2019.

He appeared in court for a third time when he admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words to a police officer on March 15 in Oxford.

Shirley was made subject to a community order, to include 200 hours of unpaid work and nine months of treatment for alcohol dependency with the charity Turning Point.

He must pay compensation totalling £400 and was fined a further £50.
