OXFORD city centre will be brought to a standstill today by the unusual site of more than 700 fun runners - all dressed as Father Christmas.

It is the first such event in the city and those taking part in the two-mile run will be raising money for two charities, East Oxford children's hospice Helen and Douglas House, and Help an Oxfordshire Child, Fox FM's charity which helps a range of local children's charities.

Head of fundraising at Helen and Douglas House, Jo Mitchell, said: "We are hugely excited to have so many Santas running. It will be amazing to see them all in suits and beards.

"We hope it might be the start of an annual festive fundraiser for the city."

She added: "We couldn't have done it without the support of so many people, particularly RM, Exeter College, the University Parks, our fabulous marshals and volunteers, Enterprise and especially Oxfordshire County Council for helping with absolutely everything.

"Now we just need people to have a great time - and to collect their sponsorship."

The race has proved so popular that entries closed a week ago. The event starts and finishes in Broad Street, taking in High Street, Parks Road, the Parks, St Cross Road and Holywell Street along the way.

The route will be closed to traffic from 9am to noon. Hip-hop dancers from local group Dance Rhythms will get the Santas warmed up.

Fox FM drivetime presenter Adam Ball said: "I would like to thank everyone who has given up time to run, help and spend their Sunday morning supporting two great local charities."

As an incentive for runners to collect as much as they can, adult runners raising more than £100 in sponsorship, or children who raise over £50, will be entered into a prize draw.
