Sir - Your action in carrying out a mini-poll on 30 households in Aston Street, Oxford about waste disposal was extremely valuable. It is good to see that recycling has increased.
However, there is clearly unrest over the question of whether food waste should be collected weekly. The Lib Dems have bullied their way to success but they have effectively halved the public service of food waste collection without reducing the cost to taxpayers. They have not done anything that was not done before all the rubbish was collected before and the only change is the way in which this has been done, with our recyclable rubbish reportedly being sent to China. They have also ruined many street scenes and made Oxford a smellier place in the process.
Have the Lib Dems, or indeed any other political party, the courage to ask the taxpayers of Oxford a simple question without prevarication or conditions so that we can give a simple yes/no answer. They should ask them: Do you want to revert to a weekly collection of food waste? Remember, there should be no qualifications or slanted additions.
They should then abide by the majority vote of the taxpayers and do what the voters want. This would be a landmark for all that Liberal Democrats stand for. But have they the courage and the intent to serve the public and implement the will of the people?
