Sir - Ms Fooks has said (Report, November 23): "Why do some people want a return to weekly collections? It's the food waste, I think." That's very shrewd of the lady! Let them eat vitamin pills.
This somewhat aristocratic attitude towards the common people, living as we do in squalid little boxes with hardly any proper garden, eating food and producing disgusting rubbish all the time, is charmingly quaint, but I don't know what it will do for a lady or a régime which thinks that way. This ancien régime will not last forever.
Many of the people are revolting, as Ms Fooks no doubt realises, despite her announcement of a "triumph" and her amazing claim to have "won hearts and minds" (Report, November 23).
Despite being asked on your letters page (November 16) and in several emails to prominent Greens including Peter Tatchell, the Greens in East Oxford scarcely seem to have decided yet what their policy on refuse collection really is. Their minds are on higher matters, no doubt, and one of them does hint at a code of practice.
Meanwhile things are getting worse. Postmen have been forced to deliver some letters by leaving them precariously perched on top of wheelie bins blocking essential access; a nonagenarian lady moves bins for her neighbours to avoid this kind of situation. The responsibility for the risk to our mail, and to our old ladies, and for the state of our streets, lies fairly and squarely with you-know-who - but it's amazingly difficult to pin down exactly who that is! Is it really poor Jean Fooks, or somebody else?
We are always being told by her friends that we should not attack her. However, we are not obliged to vote for her or her party, or for the strangely taciturn Greens either.
Roger Moreton, East Oxford
