CREWS from three stations battled in the blazing heat with a field fire near a caravan park.

The incident happened at around 4.10pm yesterday afternoon behind the Cotswold View Caravan and Camping Park near Charlbury.

Initially two fire engines from Witney Fire Station and one specialist 4x4 vehicle from Burford Fire Station were sent to deal with the incident.

But as soon as they arrived, they realised that the scale of the cut crop field and the difficulty of accessing the field - which also had a baler involved - would mean more resources were needed.

Two additional fire engines were sent to the scene from Kidlington and Eynsham as well as another specialist 4x4 firefighting vehicle from Banbury fire station

Crew Manager Emile Tredoux from Witney said: “Crews worked extremely hard in arduous weather conditions to tackle a large area of fire to prevent it spreading.

"Field fires are notoriously difficult and rapidly evolving; it was compounded by the fact that the fire was wind driven with difficulty accessing the field.”

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding the public to stay vigilant during times of dry, hot weather that heightens the risk of field fires particularly those with standing dried or cut crops. 

Further investigations are taking place to determine the cause of the fire, but initial observations would suggest that it was accidental.
