My thanks to Michael Lamble for correcting my mistake in thinking that Wantage had given the freedom of the borough to the Royal Berkshire Regiment (Oxford Mail, November 19).
So it joins Didcot among the Berkshire towns that did not honour the county regiment.
I was also out of step in stating that the regimental march of the Royal Berkshires was The Dashing White Sergeant, not The Farmer's Boy. Sixty-odd years have passed since I was in the regiment and memories fade.
But in the 2nd Battalion, we seemed to march as much to The Farmer's Boy as Here Comes Wilmer. We used these words to The Dashing White Sergeant, Wilmer being our CO - Lieut Col Wilmer Bickford.
I left the regiment long before the 1959 amalgamation with the Wiltshires to form 'The Wonders' - 1st Battalion, The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment.
