OXFORD is 'greener' than the UK as a whole when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions, new figures reveal.
Data from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs show the city is pumping fewer tonnes of climate-changing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per head of population than the national average.
Oxford produces 1.1 million tonnes of CO2 per year, according to the 2005 figures - a total of 8.4 tonnes per person - below the national average of 9.3 tonnes per head.
Also below average is West Oxfordshire, which produces 8.8 tonnes per person. The county's worst district was Cherwell with 12.6 tonnes per person. The figure for both South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse was 10.5.
