More than 200 Poles gathered at Oxford Town Hall tonight for a reception in honour of their contribution to the city economy.

Oxford Lord Mayor John Tanner hosted the event, which was organised in conjunction with the Oxfordshire Racial Equality Council.

Mr Tanner said: "I am thrilled to hold this reception for Oxford's new Polish community.

"I want to welcome the Poles and thank them for the contribution they are making to the life of our city.

"Oxford is a tolerant place and we have always welcomed newcomers from around the globe."

Mr Tanner chose the Poles because they are the largest group of East European migrants in Oxford.

The evening included speeches by Oxford City Council leader John Goddard and representatives from the city's growing Polish community.
