SHOPKEEPERS on an Oxford estate spoke about fears for their safety after an armed raid on a bookies.

Two men wearing balaclavas threatened staff at Ladbrokes betting shop in Blackbird Leys Road with a machete and a shotgun, before making off with £2,000 on Saturday night.

People working in nearby shops said they had been shaken by the incident. One shopkeeper is calling for CCTV to be installed at the parade.

Yakup Sancar, manager of the Branos fast food restaurant, said: "I think there needs to be CCTV fitted outside these shops to make sure that when this sort of thing happens the police have something they can use.

"There are a lot of school children that come through here and people shopping."

A member of staff at the bookies, who asked not to be named, said two people were working at the time of the robbery and are expected to be off work indefinitely, and added: "They are both badly shaken up and one of them might not come back to work at all."

Police urged anyone with information to call Det Con Steve Clarke on 08458 505505.
