After the success of the Central Italian case offer in July, we have put together a special mixed case of rich southern Italian and Sicilian wines that are a perfect match for hearty winter foods.
Two of them come from Puglia, the fertile heel of Italy's 'boot', which produces as much wine as the whole of Australia, while the other two are from Sicily, which has more vineyards than any of the other Italian regions and competes with Puglia for first place as Italy's largest wine producer.
Both areas produce sun-ripened wines of wonderful depth and richness.
The Southern Italian mixed case costs £72 and includes three bottles of each of the following four wines:
Grecanico Cusumano 2006, Sicily: The grecanico grape variety is planted on the Menfi hillsides and is one of Sicily's most popular wines with complex aromatic flavours of fresh limes and citrus fruit. Well balanced with a refreshing finish, the wine is a great match for prawns and seafood pasta.
Rosso del Salento Barocco 2005, Puglia: Made from a mix of local grape varieties, this sun-baked red has flavours of black cherry and roasted meats along with a nice floral touch of violets on the nose. A great match for rich stews and casseroles.
Primitivo Barocco 2005, Puglia: The primitivo grape (or zinfandel in California) produces ripe weighty wines with flavours of cherry with woodland berry and dried-fruit nuances which make this wine a perfect match for rich foods and game.
Nero d'Avola Cusumano 2006, Sicily: Nero d'avola is Sicily's most popular red grape variety which is ripened to perfection by consistent growing seasons with abundant sunshine and very little rain. Similar in style to syrah, this wine has good, rounded roasted fruit with touches of spice and leather and is a great match for most full-flavoured meat dishes.
