There is no money available for noise reduction barriers on the M40 - unless local communities finance the project themselves.
That was the stance from John Gardner, general manager of UK Highways, which maintains the M40 on behalf of the Highways Agency.
He told the M40 Chilterns Environmental Group that money is being spent on two schemes to rebuild bridges across the M40 at Stokenchurch and Milton Common, work which will be done in 2008 and 2009.
But he said there would be no funding available for noise reduction barriers to be put up during the work.
Mr Gardner promised he would keep trying to find ways to minimise the inevitable disruption to traffic while the work was going on.
