NISSAN North America has unveiled the all-new Murano during a high-profile press conference at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Originally introduced in the US during 2003, followed by Japan and then Europe in early 2005, Murano was designed to set new standards for style and sportiness in the expanding mid-size crossover sport-utility vehicle marketplace.

A Nissan spokesman said the second generation Murano had been designed as "a 'super evolution' of the original - with a new exterior and interior, enhanced technology and an improved driving feel resulting from a new, advanced platform and continued refinement of Murano's standard V6 engine and advanced, second-generation Xtronic CVT".

The Murano comes equipped with a VQ-series 3.5-litre V6 engine delivering 265 horsepower and an advanced automatic transmission with adaptive shift control that provides a sporty and smooth driving experience.

A new "D" platform, first introduced on the Altima in 2007, provides a solid foundation with new lighter suspension components, and increased stiffness. New shock absorbers provide sure footing on all surfaces, while a speed-sensitive power steering system delivers the proper levels of assistance in around-town and high-speed driving.

The new model is scheduled to go on sale in the US early in January and will hit European streets towards the end of the year.
