A POLICE officer has been standing on guard outside Oriel College on Oxford’s High Street after protesters last week called to remove the controversial Cecil Rhodes statute, over accusations he was a racist.
Here is a timeline of events up to now:
- It wasn't long before eyes turned to Oxford, where the memorial of Cecil Rhodes stands tall above Oriel College on Oxford High Street
- After days of silence, Oriel College put out a statement
- But that evening protesters filled the whole of High Street calling for the statue to go
- Our photographer captured it all on camera - here are 15 photos from the protests
- The next day Oxford University Chancellor Lord Patten said the fate of the statue was a matter for Oriel College, and claimed there was "hypocrisy" among critics of the statue who had also benefited from Rhodes scholarships
- Last night leaders at the university said they wanted it to go.
