OXFORD Muslims will be marking the end of Ramandan with a first of its kind live streaming event.
In Islam, Ramadan remembers the month the Quar’an was first revealed to Prophet Mohammed.
During the month, Muslims fast in the day so that they can devote themselves to their faith.
They spend the month giving up bad habits, doing good deeds, praying, and spending time with their loved ones.
Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar but the exact dates change every year in line with the cycles of the moon.
This year Ramadan started on April 23 and will end on Saturday evening.
To mark the moment, the Muslim Education Centre of Oxford (MECO) has teamed up with the Open Mosque in Cape Town to run a virtual celebration and prayer meeting on Sunday morning.
Kick-starting at 10am UK time the group will live stream ‘Id Al-Fitr with songs of worship.
The programme will then be followed by a recital of the takbir (melodic glorification of god), followed by ‘Id al-Fitr Salah (prayers), and then a sermon from the president of MECO Dr Taj Hargey.
He will reflect on fasting and Ramadan during the coronavirus.
To end the event there will be a 20-minute question and answer session for anybody who has questions.
Anybody is welcome to join in and those who want to should pre-sign up online before the event – the codes for the Zoom virtual conference call will then be sent over.
Anybody who has difficulty on Sunday morning should contact the Open Mosque on Whatsapp on +27 83 383 4848
