PEOPLE across Bicester are being urged to decorate their homes with bunting and flags and join a ‘stay at home street party’ to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Bicester Town Council was forced to cancel planned celebrations for Victory in Europe Day, which takes place from Friday to Sunday, due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

But instead of letting the important anniversary slip, the council is urging people to bring their corner of the town to life and recreate some of the magic of the day more than seven decades ago.

Back in 1945 there was a huge celebration in Market Square with a bonfire, fireworks and a street party.

For 2020, the council wants people to decorate their windows with bunting and have their own picnic in gardens, driveways or homes and toast the 75th anniversary - whilst maintaining social distancing guidelines.

It is also keen to hear stories from people who celebrated the actual VE Day.

On Sunday, May 10, there will be a special church service led by St Edburg’s Church broadcast online via zoom.

Bicester’s Mayor Jason Slaymaker said: “This is not quite the celebration we had planned. Sadly, we can’t all come together to mark this important day due to social distancing restrictions, but we would love to see windows decorated and people celebrating in their homes, gardens and driveways.

“VE Day is probably one of the most important dates in the 20th Century, and in this, the 75th anniversary year, I hope we can all take a moment to celebrate peace in Europe and remember those who lost their lives in the Second World War.”

A range of resources are now available on the town council’s website including a template to make bunting, recipes thanks to café Savoir Fare, and pre-recorded messages from a range of contributors will be added up to and on the day.

Residents are urged to enter a competition for best decorated house by taking a picture of their home and posting it on social media with the hashtags #VE75Bicester #GreatBritishBunting #VEDay75 the winner will receive a £50 voucher for Coles bookstore.

The council is keen to help promote businesses that are operating, particularly those operating delivery services of food and cakes, and will add details to their Facebook page and website.
