A WELL-OILED machine that has been feeding rough sleepers and other vulnerable people during the coronavirus pandemic is now appealing for the support of the public, so it can continue its day-to-day activities.
Since the beginning of the outbreak volunteers from the Porch day centre have been on the frontline working non-stop to keep homeless people in Oxford safe and provide meals for them.
The charity, which usually runs a cafe from its East Oxford hub, was forced to refocus its work and is now offering a mobile and takeaway service that feeds more than 100 vulnerable people every day.
In partnership with Oxford City Council the Porch has been providing a food drop-off point in Bonn Square and a takeaway from the centre on Magdalen Road, between 12pm and 2pm.
Director of the Porch Joe Fitzpatrick said that a huge number of people have come forward to give up their time and expertise to help the community however, he added the charity needs financial support from the public to keep providing the same service.

With a steadily soaring number of people donating, the Porch has now raised more than £12,000 from its set target of £20,000.
While the response has been 'overwhelming', to adapt the day centre to provide outreach services through the coming months management has to invest in additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), guidance and training, first aid kits, disposable catering containers, flasks and utensils, thermal bags and items for the Porch's 'dignity packs' for the female members.
This means that 'there is still a way to go' and that 'every penny counts', Mr Fitzpatrick appealed to people.
He said: "£20,000 is our target figure, which will be used to pay staff overtime, bring in relief workers and of course purchase all of the items needed."
Volunteers have been getting involved with cooking, serving meals at the door and helping the organisation to carry out welfare checks.
Professional chefs have also volunteered their skills to cook nourishing food three days every week.

One volunteer Leslie Prince said: "I use to be a member and the Porch supported me during a hard time in my life when I was homeless and battling drug addiction.
"People here helped me change my life for the better and now I want to give something back to them for the work they do.
"I believe that their service is essential at this time of need – they are an incredible team and the work they are doing during this pandemic will change the lives of so many people who need the support.
"It is an excellent service and I value everything they are doing."
