I refer to Tim Bickell's letter, Great Honour (Oxford Mail, November 1).
Two points need clarification.
Wantage has never bestowed the freedom of the borough on the Royal Berkshire Regiment.
Secondly, and more important, as an ex-Royal Berkshire man, Mr Bickell should know that the Royal Berkshire regimental march was The Dashing White Sergeant, not The Farmer's Boy.
This tune, in 1959, became the new regimental march of the newly-formed Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment on the amalgamation of the Royal Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiments. I, too, was proud to have served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment.
