I never miss the beautiful Remembrance Day service at the St Giles war memorial in Oxford and it was great to see the usual huge crowd (Oxford Mail, November 12).
Mercifully, the rain stopped.
On my way back to the city, a couple asked if they were near the indoor market.
I explained where it was, but told them that it was not open on a Sunday.
I asked if they had seen the service.
Their reply was interesting.
They were on a coach from Sheffield and the driver had the broadcast from the Cenotaph in London on his radio.
He asked if anyone minded that he was stopping, as other drivers did, for the two minutes' silence.
All agreed. This caused the coach to arrive late, but no-one complained.
I thought this was wonderful and proved, with the crowd at St Giles, the Cenotaph and memorials across the UK, that people really do care in honouring those to whom we owe so much.
Our sincere thanks to them all for the freedom we might not have had without their heroic bravery.
I was in the ATS.
