A HOTEL in West Oxfordshire has been given the lowest possible food hygiene rating, with an investigation still ongoing into its poor standards.

The Crown and Cushion hotel, located on High Street in Chipping Norton, was scored zero out of five when inspectors visited on March 6.

Across the three categories used to make up the final score, the hotel’s food hygiene was found to be ‘very bad’ – meaning there was ‘almost total non-compliance with statutory obligations’.

There was also ‘no’ confidence in management, which indicates a poor track record of compliance as well no food safety management system.

Structural compliance, which covers the general cleanliness and condition of the building, was also judged to be ‘bad’, meaning: “General failure to satisfy statutory obligations – standards generally low.”

A comment from management at the hotel said: “There were some issues but they have now been rectified.”

The Crown and Cushion’s website states: “In an area steeped with history the Crown and Cushion is a relaxing home away from home.

"Originally a 15th century coaching inn the Crown and Cushion is now a proud 40 bedroom hotel right in the heart of the Cotswolds.”

It added that the hotel had previously been owned by the ‘legendary drummer’ Keith Moon from The Who and his ‘legacy decadence lives on today’.

About its food, the hotel’s website states: “In our Bistro Restaurant only the best in local produce is used for our food. Every meal is freshly prepared by our highly distinguished chefs, and the atmosphere is relaxed and romantic.”

Reviews for the hotel, which is closed due to the coronavirus lockdown, are mixed on website TripAdvisor.

One recent visitor from March said the hotel 'has seen better days' and is 'not the cleanest'.

Another, who went with their family for a Sunday roast, said it was 'disappointing’, explaining: “The carvery was not great- sprouts over done so mushy, beef difficult to cut with the knives provided and roast carrots still quite hard.”

There were many who were pleased with the hotel, however, one recent guest writing: “A really clean room, comfortable bed, swimming pool, parking, friendly staff , central location and substantial breakfast.

"It’s great. Not sure what the moaners are expecting for this decent price in an expensive area."

West Oxfordshire District Council was asked for the full report but said as a decision regarding prosecution is ‘undecided as the investigation is ongoing’ it could not be released at present.
