A PUB renowned for its Sunday roasts is offering them to take away during lockdown.

The Fox Inn in Boars Hill is also doing takeaway burgers, pizzas, brownies and cheesecake.

The pub is one of a number of hostelries now providing takeaways during the coronavirus lockdown.

It is just one of the businesses being backed by the Oxford Mail's #StillopeninOxfordshire campaign.

Oxford Mail:

Staff at The Fox Inn, which was taken over by Fitzroy Davis and Katie Warnaby in February, are now working hard to meet the needs of their customers by serving up takeaways - especially roast dinners.

Customers can arrange delivery, or they can pick up their food at the pub in Fox Lane at an arranged time.

Takeaway burgers and pizzas are popular, alongside kids’ meals of fish and chips and sausage and mash and the pub is open for takeaways Monday to Thursday from 5pm to 8pm, Friday 5pm-8.30pm, Saturday noon-8.30pm and Sunday noon-7pm. Takeaway roast dinners are also being served.

The pub said: “Let us know what time you would like to collect your meal.

Oxford Mail:

“Have your bank card ready as we take payment over the phone.

“Park directly outside the pub at the time requested, open your boot and sit back in your vehicle.

“We will put the meal into your boot and close it down, ready for you to drive home to enjoy your takeaway.”

Staff added that they are making local deliveries in partnership with the Boars Hill Association, for those not able to collect food from the pub.

They are pledging to do their best to cater for customers during the crisis and urging them to place their orders as early as they possibly can.

Last week the Oxford branch of Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) welcomed a decision by national pub owners Admiral to stop charging rent, and said all companies should do the same.

Oxford Mail:

Spokesman Dave Richardson said tenanted pubs were under the most pressure and some of them close as a result of the crisis.

Many smaller breweries and small pub companies have allowed rent holidays, despite the challenges they also face.

But the others have deferred rent payments, including Greene King, Marston’s, Ei Group (formerly known as Enterprise Inns), Star Pubs and Bars (Heineken) and Punch Taverns. All have at least 500 ‘tied’ pubs.

The Pubs Code Adjudicator has called on them to support pubs through the crisis, but CAMRA national chairman Nik Antona said it was not enough to simply defer payments.

Mr Richardson said pubs were doing their best to keep community spirit alive, running online quizzes and arranging deliveries of food and beer.

Some have turned to crowdfunding to get by, inviting people to fund future bar tabs to provide some cash flow.

Those arranging deliveries of food for residents include The Holly Bush on Osney Island and The Gardener’s Arms in north Oxford

The Merry Miller in Cothill near Abingdon is also running a busy takeaway service.
