Have any of the Royal Mail managers thought through the closure of the Oxford Mail Centre?
They propose to take all the mail from Oxford and the surrounding villages to be sorted at Swindon from January 2009.
This will mean that once all the mail from the collections reaches a hub (the original Mail Centre, I presume), it will be put on to probably two articulated lorries to be transported down the A420, then once sorted, put back on the lorries to travel back to Oxford.
How many accidents and road closures have there been on the A420?
At least eight I can count from April to November this year, and plenty more in previous years.
So what happens to the mail if the road is shut?
It gets diverted along the A34, then on the M4 to Swindon, making it too late to meet despatch times, and therefore failing to reach its destination.
The reason for the closure, according to managers, is the quality of service, but I can't see how this will make an improvement - if anything, it will make it worse.
But hey, do you know something? I really don't think that the current management cares about the customers any more, just profits.
