AN AWARD-WINNING bespoke cake company has started a home delivery service.

PoppyRed Cake Company is based in Kidlington and has only been running for 18 months.

The cake company is run by Julie Hedges and Liz Mergel and they specialise in bespoke celebration cakes.

The cake baking pair have recently been awarded the title of best bakery in Oxfordshire at the National Bakery Awards in London.

Ms Hedges said: “We’ve been in the trade for many years and we have been running the business for 18 months.

“I have been baking since I left school and I’ve been doing it forever.”

The PoppyRed Cake Company was born after Ms Hedges and Ms Mergel met working at a cake shop in Oxford’s Covered Market.

Ms Hedges said: “We both worked there together for 10 years and then we decided to branch out on our own and have a go.”

The pair have made a model of Blenheim Palace and even helped Argos in Didcot celebrate its move to the new premises with a personalised cake.

Now the company will also start doing a cake delivery service.

Oxford Mail:

Ms Hedges said: “We have started to do farmers' markets and we are now launching a cake round.

“All the cakes will be additive free, and we will be doing a home delivery service.”

One of the pieces of work Ms Hedges is most proud of is the cake design of Blenheim Palace.

She said: “For me my favourite would be Blenheim, I love doing buildings.

“We made a model of Blenheim Palace; it took two people to carry it and it was on show in the Orangery at the palace for six months.”

She added: “ I’ve done Radley Camera and Bridge of Sighs. There’s not many buildings in Oxford that I haven’t recreated in cake form.”

The National Bakery Awards in London is open for all UK bakeries to enter. The award is there to celebrate the hard work and early mornings that goes into baking.

Hundreds entered the competition and travelled to London to claim the prize of best bakery in their region.

After only running the PoppyRed Cake Company for 18 months the baking pair were surprised to win a national award.

Ms Hedges said: “It was a surprise; it was lovely and very exciting to win a national award. To get this award so quickly was amazing.”

All the cakes made by the PoppyRed Cake Company are hand made using fresh locally sourced ingredients.
