DARTS legends Eric Bristow and John Lowe will be taking to the oche for an unusual sporting showdown.

For, instead of some top flight player, the hotshot aces will be taking on the have-a-go mayor of Witney, Chrissie Curry.

But although Ms Curry has the odds stacked against her, she is determined not to be totally humiliated in the civic showdown later this month, and has been busy putting in plenty of practice.

Ms Currie is raising money for Against Breast Cancer, and is being partnered by chief Witney fundraiser for the charity Jeanne Chattoe.

The pro darts players, who will be in town to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Charity, are hoping for a sell-out crowd at the Langdale Hall on Friday, November 30, from 7.30pm.

The pair are also taking part in the Christmas Fair on the same evening.

They will join the parade on Harley-Davidson motorcycles before the switching on of the Christmas lights.

Ms Currie said: "The last time Jeanne and I played darts was yonks ago. It's really just a bit of fun.

"Even if we get thrashed, I don't care. It's raising money for cancer charities, that's all I care about."

The women started preparations with a darts session at the New Inn, in Corn Street, Witney, on Friday.

Organisers of the Langdale Hall event, An Evening With Legends of Darts, are believed to have asked Eric and John to do the gentlemanly thing and throw with their wrong hands. Joining them for the night are two other big names from the darts world, Keith Deller and Cliff Lazarenko, and professional MC Paul Booth.

Organiser Colin Smith said: "I can't think of any time in the past when four high-profile darts players have played in one venue in Witney, so this is quite a coup.

"All profits from the event will be split between breast cancer and prostate cancer charities."

After the mayoral warm-up exhibition, the darts players get down to the serious business of playing against each other and challenges from local players.

Tickets for the night, at £25, include a ploughman's meal, and can be obtained from The Three Pigeons pub, in Wood Green, Witney, on 01993 702803, or from Mr Smith on 01993 704715.
