CYCLISTS can look forward to a new route at a bike event later this year.

Iconic Cycling Events, the creators of Bike Oxford, has announced that sign up for Bike 2020 is open and places are already selling fast.

New for this year, the event will offer cyclists the opportunity to start and finish at either Oxford University Rugby Club or Chipping Norton Rugby Club.

A medal and hot food at either event village is included in the ticket price.

One thousand cyclists are set to take part in one of three rides, ranging from 20 to 80 miles.

Richard Best, event director of Bike Oxford, said: “The idea behind Bike Oxford has always been to provide something for everyone.

“The short route was designed with families, new cyclists, and cycle-commuters looking to spend an enjoyable day trying out cycling for leisure in mind.

“For regular cyclists or those looking for something more adventurous, we have designed longer routes of around 50 and 80 miles to take in some of the more challenging lanes across Oxfordshire’s countryside.

Oxford Mail:

“We are delighted to offer cyclists to the west of the county the chance to join us with our additional start and finish at Chipping Norton Rugby Club.”

Refreshments at feed stations along the routes are supplied by local businesses.

In recent years, Marshall Skoda dealership in Kidlington, Hook Norton brewery and Oxford Fine Food are just some of the businesses to have lent their support.

This year, Helen & Douglas House will be Bike Oxford’s supported charity.

As such, riders will have the opportunity to donate at sign-up.

“We provide a hassle-free package for corporate teams and charities looking to offer sponsored places to employees and supporters,” Mr Best added.

“Last year, our riders supported 26 separate charities both individually and through charity-organised entry.

“We’d encourage any businesses and charities looking to support their employees and sponsored riders to get fit or raise money to get in touch.”

Louise Upton, Oxford city councillor, said: “I’m thrilled to be representing Oxford City Council at Bike Oxford this year, and am very much looking forward to riding with many of my colleagues, constituents and family members on the day.

Oxford Mail:

“We’re all excited to see a thousand cyclists from the local area and further afield come together to enjoy riding in Oxford’s historic city centre and Oxfordshire’s wonderful countryside.”

Dan Levy, West Oxfordshire district councillor and cycling champion, added: “West Oxfordshire is a fantastic place for people to cycle, and we are really pleased to welcome Bike Oxford to Chipping Norton.”

Cycling club Cowley Road Condors will continue to help at Bike Oxford, with volunteers organising training rides to prepare new cyclists for the event.

Bike 2020 will take place on Sunday, May 31.
