AN initiative has been launched for people to get involved in running events and keeping the history of former RAF Bicester alive.

Bicester Heritage is looking for local people to join its Bicester Heritage Volunteer Squadron and comes after conversations with people who were keen to get involved with the historic site.

Volunteers are invited to become an integral part of the Bicester Heritage team and to get involved with the wide range of on-site events that take place throughout the year, as well as with the archives, estates and grounds management and tour guiding.

The scheme aims to promote a greater sense of community around the site, and has been designed to offer both social and personal development opportunities to those in Bicester who are looking to gain new skills and make friends.

Tiggy Atkinson, head of the Bicester Heritage Volunteer Squadron said: "This initiative is an opportunity to build and foster a community of like-minded enthusiasts that are excited to be a part of our future.

"The volunteer community is a special group of people who want to engage in local activities but we recognise the benefits go far beyond the day-to-day activities – fostering new relationships, learning new skills, sharing existing skills and improving mental well-being.

"Bicester Heritage is excited about the future of our Volunteer Squadron and where it could lead."

Open to all adults with an interest in motoring, aviation, military history or conservation, the volunteers will play a key role in events around the site, from Scrambles, to site tours, charity functions and networking events.

For those with more of an interest in conservation, horticulture or restoration of buildings, a wide range of volunteer positions will be available across the campus.

All volunteers will receive training, equipment, induction and support within their roles, as well as passes for themselves and a guest for all Bicester Heritage and Bicester Motion events.
