MORE than 20kg of illegal tobacco used for shisha smoking has been seized from an Oxford business following an anonymous tip-off.

The suspected smuggled goods were found after Oxfordshire County Council revealed last week it had uncovered similar illegal tobacco in three Oxford businesses.

The Trading Standards investigation was part of a joint operation with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and Oxford City Council Environmental Health and Licensing.

On that occasion illegal tobacco was seized from three premises, all of which had previously been visited in August and written advice issued with follow-up meetings to ensure legal requirements were understood.

Oxfordshire County Council’s Trading Standards team has now revealed following that investigation it received an anonymous tip-off via the Illegal Tobacco Hotline.

This resulted in a visit to an Oxford retailer where more than 20kg of suspected smuggled shisha tobacco was seized.

The tobacco did not carry the statutory graphic or text warnings.
