FANS came out in an upbeat mood from Oxford United's first winning game under new manager Darren Patterson on Saturday.

Young supporters in particular gave the thumbs-up for the change from 67-year-old Jim Smith to younger blood following a 3-1 home win against Northwich Victoria in the first round of the FA Cup.

Dale Wood, who has supported Oxford United since he was six, was really pleased with the teams' performance.

The 13-year-old, from Wallingford, said: "They put some brilliant tackles in and showed good sportsmanship - but most importantly they won.

"I think they are going to go all the way. You could see the difference in today's game especially compared with recent games, like their 5-0 defeat against Rushden.

"The spirits were high among players and the fans and I hope they can keep it up."

Following Friday's announcement that Mr Patterson was taking over from United legend Mr Smith, just under 3,000 fans bought tickets to the cup tie.

Mr Patterson led the team out on to the pitch with a welcoming round of applause from those fans who came to show their support.

Fan Eric Smith has yet to give up on the team he has supported since he was a small boy.

The 16-year-old, from Wallingford, said: "The change from Jim Smith to Darren Patterson showed. They were playing a lot better today. Mr Patterson obviously had some ideas which were proved on the pitch.

"I hope they can keep this standard up. I think their performance was excellent. Their ball possession was good and I think with a performance like today, the fans are bound to come back and fill the stadium once again."

During the cold, windy, and thankfully dry game, Gareth Powell said Oxford United were definitely the better team and performed much better during the second half.

The 15-year-old, from Headington, said: "I am glad they won, but there is need for further improvement."

The low attendance was not that much of a shock to supporters.

Attendance was set to be under 2,000 before the announcement of Mr Patterson's promotion.

United's reward for their victory on Saturday was a home tie against Southend.
