The organiser of a charity music festival being held in Oxford on Saturday is calling on people to put their hands in their pockets and support the cause.

The seventh Audioscope Festival takes place at the Oxford Carling Academy, in Cowley Road, and organiser Stuart Fowkes wants to raise as much money for homelessness charity Shelter as possible.

Mr Fowkes, who will play with his band Sunnyvale Noise Sub-Element, said he hoped the event would raise about £2,500.

He said: "Ticket sales are going fairly well but there will be plenty available on the door.

"As winter creeps up on us you look around Oxford and see the nights getting colder and you see the homeless problem all around you. I think that's reason enough for people to take action and do something about it.

"Even if it's something as simple as coming along to the Academy for an afternoon and putting your hand in your pocket and hopefully having a good time at the same time then I think it's worth going."

So far a total of £15,000 has been raised for the charity at the last seven festivals, and a warm-up gig last weekend at the Port Mahon, in St Clement's, featured Andy Yorke - brother of Radiohead's Thom Yorke - and raised £250.

Mr Fowkes, who will be opening the festival at 1.15pm, said he believed the festival would be the best yet.

He said: "The upstairs venue is wonderful. It has not physically changed much from the old Zodiac but the sound is really crisp - and the staff have been really supportive and have carried on where the Zodiac left off."

Audioscope promises an eclectic mix of music, from German electronica legends Michael Rother, of Kraftwerk, and Dieter Mobius, of Cluster and Harmonia, to Oxford acts Witches, and the Winchell Riots.

Mr Fowkes said: "In terms of variety, we're really excited because we have got a ridiculously impressive line-up.

"It has got everything from the bizarre to the popular and melodic. And in terms of variety it is the best one we have ever done."

Tickets cost £14 in advance from www.wegottickets.com or www.audioscope.co.uk or £15 on the door.
