The Southern Rhône Valley has been producing wine since Roman times and for hundreds of years its wines were prized above even those of Burgundy. Using a mix of grapes that are predominantly grenache and syrah, the wines are spicy, concentrated and packed with ripe roasted fruit. They are an excellent partner for robust meat dishes, casseroles, game and cheese.
The Southern Rhone Mixed Case costs £76 and contains three bottles each of the following four wines:
Domaine des Gravennes Côtes du Rhône 2006: Classic fresh young wine that shows spice from the grenache grape variety along with soft redcurrant fruit flavours.
Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Côtes du Ventoux 2006: Made from vines grown on the slopes of Mont Ventoux, this well-known grower has produced a wine brimming with wonderfully ripe red berry fruit and spice.
Domaine Rose-Dieu Côtes du Rhône 2004: An excellent example of mature Rhône, this classic wine has soft mellow fruit flavours of redcurrant and spice - a velvety smooth and rich style with good rounded fruit.
Domaine Beaumalric Beaumes de Venise 2005: The village of Beaumes de Venise is possibly better known for its sweet wines but its reds are also of excellent quality, having lovely deep and concentrated soft ripe fruit, integrated spice and flavours of leather and rich red berry fruit.
