IT IS a Chinese martial art known for its slow motion routines and, as people in Blackbird Leys are finding out, it is perfect for the over-50s.
Tai Chi - which translates roughly as Supreme Ultimate Boxing - aims to generate energy and strength through movement. It is also believed to have a number of health benefits.
At The Clockhouse, in Long Ground, Blackbird Leys, the Leys Community Development Initiative charity has been running classes for older people - and they are proving a big hit.
Isabella Williams, 75, from Blackbird Leys Road, said: "I like everything about it - I wish there were two classes a week.
"I have had a couple of operations in my shoulders and it really helps with that. I think everyone would enjoy it - it's gentle exercise with good company."
Dorothy Gardner, 75, of Brambling Way, Blackbird Leys, said: "Because I've got one or two health problems, I thought it would be nice to come along and see what Tai Chi was all about.
"I have been about four times now. We do exercises that work the whole body and it's a very relaxing thing for older people like me.
"My son has a little laugh that I'm learning Tai Chi, but he says, 'Good for you, Mum'."
Joginder Singh, 52, from Pegasus Road, said: "My doctor told me to lose some weight and they said Tai Chi was very good for health.
"It is nice and a bit different to your normal exercise classes."
Grand Master Kongjie Gou, of the Oxford Tai Ji Gong Fu Instititute, teaches the class.
He said: "Tai Chi improves breathing and helps your body to be more flexible and this is helpful for older people.
"When people get older their body stiffens and gets weaker and Tai Chi builds strength."
Project development worker Weronika Najda, of the Leys Community Development Initiative, said: "I did a survey of local residents and the focus was on health and improving health.
"I found the Grand Master did classes for the over-50s and thought it could be perfect. It's not extreme and it's not intimidating.
"You see people from all different backgrounds here - it's a very universal exercise."
The one-hour classes run from 10am every Thursday and entry costs £1.50.
