BAKERY chain Greggs is to open its new Cornmarket Street branch in March, its bosses have revealed.
The chain has put forward plans to the city council to open a bakery in the former Moss Bros in Cornmarket near Carfax.
The large retail unit has been closed since the men’s fashion chain switched to the Westgate Centre and it is now being fitted out for the new bakery.
A spokesman for the chain said: “We can confirm that we will be opening a shop on Cornmarket Street, Oxford in March this year.”
A staff recruitment day is taking place in Cowley on Thursday.
A recruitment advert said: “Come along to our recruitment event on Thursday between 9.30am and 5pm in Greggs, Templars Square Shopping Centre, 121 Pound Way, Cowley, Oxford, to find out more about the role and apply.”
No precise opening date has yet been revealed but it is understood that the branch is expected to open by the middle of the month.
Existing staff members are set to pocket about £300 each after the firm announced a £7m windfall payment to its employees.
The company said pre-tax profits for 2019 were ahead of expectations.
Greggs’ 19,000 employees who have been with the firm since before March 31, 2019 will get £300 each, while the remaining 6,000 staff members will be paid £75 per quarter they have worked for the baker.
The bonus will be paid at the end of January.
It comes a year after the launch of Greggs’ much-hyped vegan sausage roll, which has helped push up sales and extend the chain’s appeal to a new audience.
