A not-for-profit community network is coming to Witney for a special Flood Fair in the wake of the July deluge, which hit more than 1,600 homes and 80 businesses in the district.
The National Flood Forum is linking up with the Environment Agency and West Oxfordshire District Council to give information and advice.
Forum spokesman Mary Dhonau said householders and businesses needed to take their own positive action to avoid "the heartbreak" of repeat flooding. She added: "There was a lot said at the time about not enough sandbags, but forget them. They are just a placebo and are no use, in particular to the elderly and vulnerable who can't lift them and put them in place."
"We will be at the fair showing a whole range of products which people can use to make more effective barriers, including doorboards, airbricks and retractable membranes."
David Harvey, district council cabinet member for the environment, said: "We are delighted to be supporting this initiative - it is an opportunity for anyone with concerns for the safety of their home and family to acquire a great deal of useful information to help protect themselves."
Manufacturers and suppliers will be showcasing their flood protection products at the fair on November 16, from 2.30pm to 6.30pm, at Witney's Windrush Leisure Centre.
