POLICE investigating a fatal car crash are appealing for a driver who was at the scene to come forward.

The crash happened at about 9.45am on the B4508 between Hatford and Gainfield, just past the Stanford in the Vale turning and opposite the Grey Fox Racing Stables.

A blue Renault Master van was travelling in the direction of Gainfield from Hatford and a silver Peugeot 106 travelling in the opposite direction, when they collided.

Doreen Swift, 79, of Wheelwright Court, Buckland, who was driving the Peugeot, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the van, a man aged 19, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Officers investigating are keen to speak to a woman who was in a dark blue car which could possibly have been a Volkswagen Golf.

The woman stopped at the scene but left before police arrived. Police said she spoke with a Canadian or American accent.
