A MAN has been arrested after a hit and run where a 12-year-old girl was left in a critical condition.
She was walking on the pavement with her family in Newbury, at around 9pm on Friday, when a white flatbed van or recovery vehicle hit her.
It didn't stop at the scene and instead raced off down the northbound carriageway of the A339, over the railway bridge near Station Road.
She was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital and is still in a critical condition.
This morning a 19-year-old man from Winchester, Hampshire, was arrested.
Yesterday police appealed to the driver directly, urging them to come forward.
Officers also said the vehicle may have 'noticeable damage' around the front.
Investigating officer, PC Mark Dunne of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident, and have now arrested a man in connection with it.
“I would like to continue to appeal to anyone with any information about the incident to come forward, as you could have details which could help our investigation.
“Additionally, I would like to thank everyone who has so far shared our appeal and who has called in with information."
Police have the power to hold somebody in custody for 24 hours before they have to apply to the courts for more time.
We are expecting an update on whether he has been released or charged tomorrow morning.
Anybody with information that could help the force, should call 101, quoting the reference 1178 (27/12).
