THERE were sobs from the family of motorcyclist Billy Elbrow as a woman was found guilty of causing the crash that ended his life when she ran a red light.
Amanda Day was on trial at Oxford Crown Court accused of one count of causing the 20-year-old’s death by careless driving over the crash, which took place at Milton Interchange last year.
After jurors failed to come to an unanimous verdict following the four-day trial Judge Nigel Daly this morning said they were allowed to give a majority verdict.
Just an hour later a guilty verdict was returned with a majority of 11 to one.

Judge Daly said the crash, which took place on the evening of August 23 last year at the busy roundabout near Didcot, had been a case of ‘momentary inattention’, adding: “For some reason she missed the red light.”
The judge also criticised the layout of the roundabout and said ‘particularly that spot’ was the scene of multiple crashes adding: “It had some impact on what happened.”.
Day, 52, of Westmead, Princes Risborough, had denied she ran a red light, her defence instead insisting Mr Elbrow, from Abingdon, had himself gone through a red light on the A4130 and was at fault. Giving evidence in court on Wednesday the Ministry of Defence senior employee told jurors that on the day of the collision she was travelling from her home towards Wantage.
The jury heard that Day missed her exit and then continued around the roundabout once, travelling underneath the A34 and said she would have been going ‘about 25mph’ when the crash happened.

Asked about the colour of the traffic light at her junction she claimed it was green and said of her driving: “I was driving very carefully.”
Prosecutor Stefan Weidmann, at the opening of the trial on Monday, however, said it was a ‘simple case’, explaining: “A lady has gone through a red light with the most cataclysmic consequences.”
The court also heard from witnesses who said they saw the lead up to the collision and that they watched Mr Elbrow go through a green light, meaning Day’s corresponding light would have been on red.
Mr Elbrow’s white Kawasaki motorcycle crashed with the silver Volkswagen Passat, driven by Day as she travelled on the A34 southbound.

He later died at the John Radcliffe Hospital after suffering multiple injuries as a result of the crash.
After the jury returned its verdict Judge Daly paid tribute to Mr Elbrow’s family, who sat in the public gallery throughout the trial, saying: “I want to, of course, pass on our condolences but also I am very grateful for the dignity you have expressed while watching this case."
Sentencing was adjourned until January 24 for a pre-sentence report to be produced.
Day’s bail was extended until then and an interim driving disqualification imposed.
