There was plenty of fun and laughter from the children on this occasion.
But had they been alive, their guys probably wouldn't have been as happy.
They were destined for the bonfire in a few hours.
The picture was taken on the recreation ground at Horspath, near Oxford, on November 5, 1976.
The Oxford Mail reported: "When Horspath Recreation Association announced plans for a best guy competition, the youngsters of the village got to work with gusto.
"They dug out all the old clothes they could find and the result was 17 guys."
Els Lindfield, the association's treasurer, said: "The response was really tremendous."
The children who had made guys were invited to display them on the village green all day on November 5.
Then at night, the village held a firework display, which ended with the guys being burned on a massive bonfire.
Four of the guys are shown above, with their proud owners.
One is clearly from the village playgroup.
Another carries the invitation - "Come warm with me tonight, 6.30".
According to the Mail report published at the time, the children seen here were all pupils at Horspath Primary School, but we don't know any of their names.
Do you recognise yourself, or anyone else, in the picture, or remember the event?
