The exit polls were a disappointing start for Labour and predicted a blow for them nationally and Lib Dem remained hopeful for a positive result in Henley early in the night.

Labour candidate Zaid Marham, said: “If the exit poll is accurate, then it’s a very disappointing night for Labour.”

Mr Marham believes Labours downfall nationally lies in Brexit.

He said: “I think the main reason why it’s gone like that is because the people in the northern constituencies abandoned us over Brexit, I think that’s an error on our part, there were many people in the Labour Party that were pushing for us to adopt a pro remain position which I think now was a mistake.”

Mr Marham concludes that many voters saw it as a choice between hospitals and schools or a democracy.

He believes another factor for Labour’s disappointing start was due to the Lib Dem’s campaign.

Mr Marham said:”There have been some people saying that we shouldn’t be standing and that we should all get behind the Lib Dems in order to vote out John Howell the Conservative MP .”

He continued: “Henley isn’t a Tory Lib Dem margin, but they probably have convinced enough people that it is to finish second which they may now use to claim they have more support that they have actually got.”

However, Lib Dem candidate Laura Coyle was hopeful that Henley was no longer a safe Conservative seat with voters no-longer believing in the values of the Conservative Party.

Ms Coyle said:”When we were out on the campaign trail, in terms of the Tory vote, there were lots of people talking about Brexit.”

She continued: “They were also talking about the direction of the Conservative party generally and talking about it no longer representing their values because it’s become so much more right wing than the party that they knew.”
