A GENERAL election hustings in Oxford West and Abingdon has been cancelled because of concerns for the safety of one of the candidates.
The hustings was due to be held at St Margaret's Church tonight.
But a statement sent out by the church today has confirmed it has been cancelled.
The statement said: "Due to threats being made against one of the candidates, the chairman has decided that the best course of action is to cancel this evening's hustings. We apologise for any inconvenience.
"Please pass the message on to anyone you know who may have planned to attend."
Chris Goodall, the organiser of the hustings, said one of the candidates had raised concerns for their safety after a previous hustings.
He described what had happened as 'an affront to democracy'.
Mr Goodall said: "One of the candidates phone me at 9pm last night and said they had been subject to threats at a previous hustings and therefore wished to abandon attendance at the hustings tonight."
