The 26-year-old was caught with the blade in his cell by officers on June 21 this year.
During the incident he demanded to be put into segregation in exchange for dropping the weapon, which he did.
After admitting the offence he was sentenced yesterday.
He was handed a 12-month jail term concurrent to his existing 40-month sentence and he must pay a victim surcharge.
