Police closed part of the A34 yesterday evening after a 'really serious' crash involving three cars.
Drivers reported delays of up to three hours at around 11pm and Highways England warned motorists not to move their cars unless told to by police.
Thames Valley Police roads unit took to Twitter to warn drivers.
One officer said: "A34 collusion northbound at Abingdon; this is a very serious collision but we are hoping to get trapped motorists moving again by 11pm."
Highways England tweeted: "#A34 Northbound between #Milton to #Marcham, if you are caught within the trapped traffic please DO NOT move your vehicle unless told to by our officers or TVP."
Meanwhile another crash involving four cars was blocking part of Headley Way in Oxford.
