CROWDS lined the streets of Oxford on Sunday for a peek behind the scenes of one of Netflix’s most popular long-running shows.

The cast and crew of The Crown were in the city centre filming for the fourth series of the hit drama, which follows the history of the Queen from her coronation up until the present day.

Filming for the series was concentrated around the Radcliffe Camera and nearby buildings.

Extras in smart mid-20th century period clothing were seen strolling along Catte Street.

Other extras took the parts of students, riding past on bicycles, or wearing their academic gowns and mortarboards.

There were also period cars, with engines sputtering as they started and drove along the narrow streets.

Large crowds gathered to watch filming along the northern end of Catte Street and around the Bridge of Sighs and the Sheldonian Theatre.

There were calls of ‘stay out of the road!’ from members of the crew ahead of filming, to warn onlookers about the dangers of stepping into the path of cars, or the camera.

Production company lorries filled the streets around the Radcliffe Camera, with crew members cooking, preparing equipment, and readying actors into their costumes.

Set dressing in the area included posters on a board underneath the Bridge of Sighs, advertising Oxford University Philosophical Club and the Oxford Union Society.

Parts of Mansfield Road were closed to parked cars on Sunday due to filming, with yellow traffic cones reserving spaces along the road for vehicles associated with production.

The third series of the Crown is set to debut on Netflix on November 17.

Both the third and fourth series will star Olivia Coleman as Elizabeth II, and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip.

Olivia Coleman is known for her roles in Broadchurch and Fleabag, as well as the award winning film the Favourite.

Tobias Menzies has starred in Game of Thrones and Outlander.

They take over the roles from Claire Foy and Matt Smith respectively, who played younger versions of the royals in the first two series of the drama.

While series one and two covered the early years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, from 1947 to 1963, the third and fourth series will span the years 1964 to 1976.

There is set to be an episode all about the Apollo moon landing in 1969.

The Crown is not the only television drama which has been caught filming in Oxford city centre in recent months.

Filming for series 7 of Endeavour took place at the end of September also near the Bridge of Sighs.

Actors Shaun Evans and Roger Allam couldn’t resist a chuckle during takes as they filmed for the police drama.

In July last year, security was tight around Holywell Street with a long line of film trucks parked up for work on His Dark Materials.

The BBC and HBO series based on the novels of Philip Pullman starts tonight.
