FIREFIGHTERS have released dramatic photos of crews wading into the River Thames to rescue a woman from her submerged car.

The car entered the water via a narrow slope at St Helen's Wharf in Abingdon, at about 8.45am this morning.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which responded with help from police and ambulance teams, has now released more details about what happened.

Fire crews from Abingdon and Didcot rushed to the riverside with the rescue team based at Kidlington, and found the car in the water near St Helen's Church. 

Firefighters report that the driver had climbed out of the vehicle and was in the water upon arrival.

Paramedics treated her at the scene and took her to the John Radcliffe Hospital, and police said her condition is not serious. 

Crews then used the rescue vehicle to winch the car out of the water to prevent contamination.

Watch manager Adam Cook, of Abingdon fire station, said: "The driver of the vehicle was very lucky that [she] managed to get out of the car when it entered the water.

"The crews were quickly on scene and were able to rescue [the woman] from the water.

"We urge people to take care in and around water especially as we enter the winter months."
