NORTH Oxford residents have expressed their 'horror' over the potential centrepiece of a major £500m building project, according to a county councillor.

Oxford North could be built between on land close to the A44, A40 and A34 near the Wolvercote Roundabout.

Thomas White Oxford (TWO), which is owned by St John's College, Oxford, wants to build 480 homes and employment space for 4,500 jobs. A 180-bedroom hotel would also be built.

Whether the city council accepts the plan is set to be decided over the next few months.

Paul Buckley, the Liberal Democrat county councillor for Wolvercote and Summertown, said the current plans are 'extremely disappointing from an architectural perspective'.

He said 'canyon-like street' would be created if proposals went ahead.

Ire was reserved for the Red Hall, which is currently seen as the centrepiece of the scheme.

He added: "The Red Hall is extremely tall and ugly and will blight the appearance of the site from its very earlier days. It will be clad in bright red, corrugated aluminium sheeting. Many local residents have expressed to me their horror at the images they have seen of this building."

Concerns over the number of affordable houses proposed, cycling and walking provision and traffic were also raised.
